WINCHESTER — Chief Peter MacDonnell reports that Winchester Police arrested a man on attempted breaking and entering charges Saturday night after an off-duty officer who was walking his dog noticed the man behaving suspiciously.

ALEX BALDWIN, AGE 31, who is currently homeless but most recently resided in WOBURN, was arrested and charged with:

  • Attempting to Commit a Crime (Breaking and Entering)
  • Disorderly Person
  • Assault and Battery on a Police Officer
  • Resisting Arrest

In addition to the charges he faces in Winchester, BALDWIN is a suspect in an active trespassing case in Woburn.

On Saturday, June 24, at approximately 9:45 p.m., an off-duty Winchester Police officer walking his dog in the area of Main Street and Hill Street observed BALDWIN exit the parking lot of a business and raise the hood on his sweatshirt after noticing the officer.

BALDWIN then walked along Hill Street and ducked in between two homes, where the off-duty officer saw him walking in a crouched stance looking through a window into one of the homes. BALDWIN then covered his hand with the sleeve of his sweatshirt and tested the handle of a door to see if it was unlocked.

When he saw the officer watching him, BALDWIN froze briefly and then began to flee on foot as the officer pursued. After the officer caught up to him, BALDWIN pushed him away and fled again, then threw a punch at the officer as on-duty police arrived to assist and place him under arrest.

“This is an excellent example of the type of awareness and commitment that our officers should display at all times, even when they are not on duty,” Chief MacDonnell said. “I am proud of the work that led to bringing this suspect, who has a history of trespassing, into custody.”

BALDWIN was held on $2,000 bail pending his arraignment at Woburn District Court.
